Established in 1965, the Sales & Use Tax Department is responsible for the effective administration and enforcement of the St. James Parish School Board and Parish Council Sales and Use Tax Ordinances. Under the direction of Neshelle Nogess, the department collects and enforces the collection of all sales and use taxes, penalties, interest and any other charges that may be due under the provisions of the ordinances for the School Board, Parish Council, Town of Gramercy and the Town of Lutcher. Our Field Auditor, Melinda Roberts is responsible for performing sales and use tax audits to examine the financial records, documents, and accounts to ascertain that all transactions subject to sales and use tax are properly recorded and ensure companies operating and conducting businesses in St. James Parish are in compliance with the sales and use tax laws as set forth by the ordinances. Sheila Fisher, our department secretary is responsible for processing all sales and use tax returns as submitted by the taxpayers, updating our master files, mailing of tax returns and delinquent notices, and performing general secretarial duties on a daily basis. The Sales & Use Tax Department is a member of the Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators (LATA). The Association meets on a quarterly basis and is comprised of tax professionals from both the public and private sector who seek to promote the effective and fair administration of local taxes.
